When forklifts operate within a company, due to the short travel distances, they require numerous U-turns and reversing maneuvers. During U-turns and reversing, the driver's field of vision is restricted to a certain extent, making accidents more likely to occur during these maneuvers because of limited visibility and poor observation. To this end, the following preventive measures should be taken when forklifts make U-turns and reverse. 1. When making a U-turn, the forklift should, as much as possible, choose a wide road or open area to do so, turning from right to left. Before turning, the driver should observe the front, rear, left, and right conditions in advance, issue a turning signal in a timely manner, and execute the turn without affecting the movement of other forklifts. If the forklift cannot complete the turn in one go and needs to reverse, the driver must carefully observe the situation behind the vehicle, appropriately control the speed, and sound the horn to give a signal. 2. When reversing in workshops, warehouses, freight yards, narrow roads, and other areas, a dedicated person should stand behind the forklift (in a position easily visible to the driver) to direct the reversing operation. During reversing, attention should not only be paid to the rear of the forklift, but also to the position of the front wheels, to prevent the front parts of the forklift from colliding with obstacles. Forklifts must not reverse at intersections, on bridges, in tunnels, on steep slopes, or in hazardous areas. 3. Forklift operations and loading/unloading tasks often require reversing. Due to the limited visibility when reversing, the operator feels a reduced sense of control, making it difficult to control the direction and position of the forklift in reverse. Additionally, when a forklift reverses, the original front-wheel steering becomes rear-wheel steering, and the original rear-wheel steering becomes front-wheel steering, which differs from the subjective feel of steering during normal operation. The steering control position also changes, making reversing less smooth, convenient, flexible, and accurate than moving forward. Typically, when reversing, the forklift should first be brought to a stop, the surrounding conditions should be clearly assessed, and the reversing route and target should be selected, while paying attention to whether there are oncoming forklifts, pedestrians, or animals in front and behind. If there may be obstacles along the reversing path, the driver should get off the vehicle to check when necessary. Then, based on the situation, the transmission should be shifted to an appropriate gear for reversing, the horn should be sounded, and the proper driving posture and operating methods should be adopted. During reversing, the forklift speed must be well controlled, avoiding sudden acceleration or deceleration, to prevent the starter from stalling due to lack of power or injuries caused by excessive reversing force.
