How to Choose a Compact Wheel Loader with a Telescopic Boom

Compact wheel loaders are popular because of their small working footprint, combined with excellent maneuverability, making them ideal for tight working areas. However, "compact" here also refers to their lift height and working radius, which is precisely where they are less popular. What's the solution? The answer is telescopic-boom compact wheel loaders. It should be noted that some models mentioned in this article do not fully meet the definition of "compact" (see the sidebar at the bottom). Later, we'll introduce machines from four manufacturers, but first, let's cover some key concepts. How much more reach can you add? The extra height and working range of these models vary, but the gains are all significant. For example, the John Deere 326 P-Tier has a vertical working range of 16 feet 3 inches, offering nearly 4 feet of additional boom length over its base model, the 324 P-Tier (11 feet), and even compared to the 324 P-Tier's high-lift version (12 feet 5 inches). The McCall AT1050 offers a telescopic range of 11 feet 8 inches to 14 feet 6 inches, while the AS900tele ranges from 12 feet 9 inches to 16 feet. When comparing telescopic-boom models to high-lift wheel loaders, there are pros and cons to each. Compared to fixed-boom high-lift models with the same working radius, telescopic-boom machines have a shorter overall length; they use a single arm rather than dual lift arms, providing better visibility, and they don't rely on scissor mechanisms to increase working radius like some loaders do, so visibility isn't further compromised. On the other hand, telescopic-boom models are more complex—there are more moving parts to maintain and replace; they offer less lift capacity and breakout force at full extension; and they are typically heavier. How much more does this cost? Around $7,000 more (roughly $180,000 total versus $150,000). Most of the added cost comes from the telescopic boom structure.
