How to Choose a Compact Wheel Loader with a Telescopic Boom

Compact wheel loaders are popular because of their small working footprint, and combined with excellent maneuverability, this makes them well suited to tight job sites. However, "compact" here also refers to lift height and reach, and that is not always so welcome. The solution? Telescopic compact wheel loaders. It should be noted that some of the models mentioned in this article do not fully meet the definition of "compact" (see sidebar at bottom). We will introduce machines from four manufacturers later, but first, let's look at some key concepts. How much more reach can you add? The extra height and reach of these models vary, but the gains are significant. For example, the John Deere 326 P-Tier has a vertical reach of 16 feet 3 inches, nearly 4 feet of additional boom length over its base model 324 P-Tier (11 feet), even when compared with the high-lift version of the 324 P-Tier (12 feet 5 inches). The Mecalac AT1050 has a telescopic range of 11 feet 8 inches to 14 feet 6 inches, while the AS900tele ranges from 12 feet 9 inches to 16 feet. When comparing telescopic models with high-lift wheel loaders, each has advantages and disadvantages. Compared with a fixed-boom high-lift model with the same reach, a telescopic model has a shorter overall length; it uses a single boom rather than dual lift arms, providing better visibility, and unlike some loaders, it does not rely on a scissor mechanism to increase reach, so it does not further sacrifice visibility. On the other hand, telescopic models are more complex—there are more moving parts to maintain and replace; lift capacity and breakout force are lower at full extension; and they are usually heavier. How much more does this machine cost? About $7,000 (about $180,000 versus $150,000 total price). Most of the added cost comes from the telescopic boom structure. Three key questions to ask when buying Does it provide the lift and reach you need? Does it provide the breakout force and lift capacity you need? Is it compatible with my attachments?
