Forklifts operate within enterprises, and due to short travel distances, they frequently make turns and reverse. When a forklift turns or reverses, the driver's visibility is restricted to a certain extent. Because of limited visibility, incomplete observation, and other reasons, accidents occur more often when the vehicle turns or reverses. Therefore, the following precautions should be taken for forklift turning and reversing.
1. Turning: When turning, the forklift should choose a wide road or open area as much as possible, and make a single turn from right to left. Before turning, observe the front, rear, left, and right conditions in advance, issue a turning signal in a timely manner, and turn only when it does not affect the movement of other vehicles. If the turn cannot be completed in one attempt and reversing is necessary, carefully observe the conditions behind the vehicle, appropriately control the speed, and sound the horn as a warning.
2. Reversing: When reversing in workshops, warehouses, freight yards, narrow roads, and other areas, a dedicated person should stand on one side behind the forklift (a position easily visible to the driver) to direct the reversing operation. When reversing, the forklift should not only pay attention to the conditions at the rear of the vehicle but also take into account the position of the front wheels to avoid the front components of the vehicle hitting obstacles. Reversing is not allowed at intersections, bridges, tunnels, steep slopes, or dangerous sections.
3. Reversing operation methods: During forklift operation and loading, unloading, and handling tasks, reversing is often required. Since visibility is limited when reversing, perception and judgment abilities are weakened, making the direction and position of the forklift during reversing more difficult to control. Additionally, when steering in reverse, the original front-wheel steering becomes rear-wheel steering, and the original rear-wheel steering becomes front-wheel steering, which differs from the subjective feel of normal steering control, and the position of steering control also changes, making reversing less smooth, convenient, flexible, and accurate than moving forward.
When reversing, the forklift should first be brought to a complete stop, the surrounding conditions should be clearly observed, and the reversing route and target should be selected, paying attention to whether there are oncoming vehicles, pedestrians, or animals in front and behind. If obstacles may be encountered on the reversing path, the driver should get off and inspect if necessary. Then, as needed, shift the transmission to the appropriate reverse gear, sound the horn, and adopt a suitable driving posture and operation method. During reversing, control the speed carefully, avoiding sudden acceleration or deceleration, to prevent the starter from stalling due to insufficient power or causing hazards from overly aggressive reversing.
