Off-road forklift is an engineering vehicle capable of safely and efficiently performing cargo loading, unloading, stacking, and handling operations on slopes and uneven terrain. Like counterbalance forklifts, it can be fitted with forks or various attachments to enhance operational efficiency. Off-road forklifts come in multiple structural configurations and have developed rapidly overseas. How to choose a good off-road forklift? What are the differences between off-road forklifts and regular forklifts? (1) Excellent trafficability and off-road capability with all-wheel drive. No differential is installed between axles; large-diameter, wide-base off-road tires are used, with a ground clearance of over 300mm and a departure angle exceeding 30°. (2) Articulated frame design. The frame articulation angle generally reaches ±30° to 40°, simplifying the steering system without the need for expensive steering drive axles, enabling a smaller turning radius. Steering the wheel causes the frame to swing horizontally, making it easier to align the forks with the load. For small-tonnage off-road forklifts, a rigid frame with single-axle drive and a differential lock on the drive axle may be adopted. (3) All-wheel braking. Except for small-tonnage forklifts that use expanding shoe brakes, most employ caliper disc brakes, while large-tonnage forklifts may also use wet brakes. Hand brakes are commonly used for parking. (4) For 2t to 3t articulated off-road forklifts, the front and rear axles are interchangeable. (5) The rear axle of the off-road forklift is fixed to the frame, while the front axle can pivot vertically relative to the frame by ±8° to 12°. Support hydraulic cylinders are installed between the frame and the front axle. During lifting operations, the cylinders are manipulated to keep the mast laterally vertical; during travel, the upper and lower cylinder chambers are interconnected through damping orifices, improving ride comfort. (6) Larger wheelbase and track width to enhance lateral and longitudinal stability. (7) Good maneuverability. Travel speed typically ranges from 30 to 40 km/h, with a dynamic factor exceeding 0.65, good acceleration performance, and a gradeability of 25° to 30°. (8) Larger mast tilt angles. This is essential for safe operation and travel on uneven ground, typically 10° to 15° forward tilt and 15° backward tilt. (9) Operator seat positioning. To ensure a good view during loading operations, the seat is generally positioned toward the front. For articulated forklifts, it is placed as far forward on the front frame as possible, with an overhead guard cab featuring FOPS/ROPS installed according to different operational requirements. (10) Travel system. Similar to loaders, it offers multiple options including mechanical transmission (Me), hydraulic-shift mechanical transmission (HyC), torque converter transmission (T/C), and hydrostatic transmission (HYD). The difference lies in full-power matching, where the maximum load condition is full-load climbing.
